PH81LIB vanaf PA-00069

Frank PF1SCT was op pad met een special call en combineerde een WWFF PAFF park met kasteel de Strijdhoeve bij Udenhout. Hij schrijft:

We hebben een mooi bos gevonden achter de Maria Kapel, dat sluit mooi aan bij onze ses PH81lib.

De auto geparkeerd aan de doorgaande weg en na enkele minuten lopen vonden we een mooie plek. Daar hebben we een vertical en een endfed opgesteld. De condities waren erg slecht, minor storm en we hebben ons best moeten doen. Soms kwamen er enkele stations na elkaar maar het was flink werken om ze bij elkaar te sprokkelen. Wederom een contest werkte ook niet mee.

De plek was erg rustig en open. En ik denk in de zomer ook lekker koel onder de hoge beuken.

Er lag een mooie boomstam die als tafel dienst kon doen en de na enkele pogingen hadden we ook een draad in boom hangen.

Eelco vanaf Duivenvoorde

Eelco PD1EG was voor het eerst actief binnen COTA-PA. Hij activeerde Kasteel Duivenvoorde PA-00222 op 4 en 5 maart.

Bij zijn twee bezoekjes logde hij 16 chasers op zijn X6100 in FT8 op 40m.  

Toon activeert nieuwe referentie

Toon PD0RWL is dit weekend actief geweest van de net toegevoegde locatie Kasteel van Wouw (PA-00289). 

Toon meldt:

Zaterdag kwam de voorzitter van regio A51 Wim,  PA3WT en zondag Toine, PE1PPY langs op locatie..

Beide dagen gewerkt met Icom 706MK2G. Zaterdag met homemade mobiele antenne en mobiele TWX raamantenne, zondag een rondstraler in de mast, en de FD4 voor HF. Totaal log 81 qso's gemaakt. 

PI4CG vanuit Fort Buitensluis (PA-02073)

Het contest team van PI4CG was op Open Monumentendag op 9 en 10 september actief vanaf PA-02073 - Fort Buitensluis. Het team heeft hier een vaste opstelling met een shack in het kruitmagazijn 1884.

PD0RWL activeert 10 lokaties

Toon PD0RWL is weer flink op pad geweest. Hij heeft de afgelopen weken 10 forten en bunkers geactiveerd: 34, 151, 211, 2033, 2083, 3001, 3002, 3003, 3014, 3017.

PF6SABINA vanaf Fort Sabina

Tijdens Kunst en Monumenten Route Moerdijk en de Open Monumentendagen op 9 en 10 september 2023 hebben wij Fort Sabina geactiveerd met de call PF6SABINA, referentienummer PA-02080.

Het thema van de kunsttentoonstelling in het fort was de Watersnoodramp in 53. Wij hebben de rol van de zendamateurs van toen belicht en daarbij een link naar het heden gemaakt door ook de Dares te benoemen. Met dank aan het Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk konden wij het geheel met een aantal posters aankleden. 

De ontvangst op Fort Sabina was hartelijk. Ons onderkomen was een kazemat waar het binnen lekker koel was. Na aankomst zaterdagmorgen hebben wij eerst de mast met antennes bovenop de kazemat geplaatst. Gezien het weer een warme klus. Na het testen van de antennes en opstellen van de twee sets werd rond de middag de eerste verbinding gemaakt met PB6BB, de voormalige BB schuilbunker te Westenschouwen. Beide dagen hebben wij de nodige bezoekers mogen ontvangen. Ook een flink aantal amateurs hebben wij persoonlijk mogen begroeten. In totaal zijn er op HF en VHF 68 verbindingen gemaakt voor een groot deel dankzij de ervaring en inzet van Toon PD0RWL. Zondagmiddag zijn wij, na het afbreken van het station, moe maar voldaan naar huis gegaan.

PD0RWL maakt rondje langs de forten

Toon PD0RWL gaat in januari verder met het activeren van de recent toegevoegde forten. Op 11 en 13 januari activeerde Toon PA-00164, PA-02037, PA-02047, PA-02062, PA-02077 en PA-02081. Twee keer kon hij twee objecten tegelijk activeren omdat de 1km cirkels hiervan overlappen.

Ook kon Toon bij Batterij onder Brakel (PA-02037) een combinatie maken met het WWFF PAFF programma omdat dit fort in natuurgebied PAFF-0135 ligt.

Hij maakte 414 QSOs - het merendeel op 40m. Hieronder wat beelden van de twee dagen:

PD0RWL vanaf PA-02074 en PA-02076

Toon heeft de smaak te pakken en is de recent toegevoegde forten in zijn omgeving aan het bezoeken.

Op 6 januari was Toon actief bij Halsteren en Steenbergen vanaf Fort de Roovere en Fort Henricus. In totaal maakte hij die dag 129 QSOs - vrijwel allemaal op 40m in phone.

PD0RWL vanaf PA-2073, 2079 en 2080

Toon is het nieuwe jaar goed gestart met activaties van drie forten op 3 januari. Deze drie objecten zijn dit jaar aan het programma toegevoegd.

Toon was actief rondom Willemstad vanaf Fort Buitensluis (PA-02073 - 60 QSOs), Fort Prins Frederik (PA-02079) en Fort Sabina (PA-02080 - 58 QSOs)

Toon PD0RWL castle-active

Toon PD0RWL has been visiting a large number of castles over the last weeks. He has helped quite a few chasers reach a next award level. To give an indication of Toon's activities you will find some of his photos below.

Toon PD0RWL is de afgelopen weken actief geweest vanaf meerdere kasteellocaties. Met zijn activiteiten heeft hij een flink aantal kasteel-chasers aan een nieuw awardniveau geholpen. Hieronder wat beelden die Toon tijdens zijn activiteiten heeft gemaakt.

The P*10WCA event has ended

WCA turned 10 years in June and COTA-PA joined in the festivities with eight special calls. It has been a great month with an activity level we have not seen in PA ever before. 

Eight different operators PH2A, PA2GB, PA3FYG, PD0RWL, PE4BAS, PA1H, PG8M and PH0NO went out to 80 different castles, logging 8650 QSOs with 2550 different chasers from 61 DXCC. Below is the list of DXCC with more than 200 QSOs this month.

A total of 222 chasers (coincidentally a very nice number) managed to reach one of the special P*10WCA award levels: 97 bronze, 79 silver and 46 gold.

P*10WCA - third week

The third week has passed and all eight special calls (PA10WCA-PH10WCA) have been active by now - activating a total of 58 different castle references. 

Together we have managed to log 6700 QSOs from more than 2200 chasers from 62 DXCC.

In the meantime 186 chasers have managed to reach one of the award levels. There is a special page on this website dedicated to the award: WCA10 Award page

We are in the second week of the anniversary event for the World Castle Award. Seven of the eight special calls have been active from 35 different castles in The Netherlands.
3800 QSOs haven been logged with 1500 different chasers.

As there are already 100 chasers that have reached award levels bronze, silver or even gold, we have decided to make the awards available already based on the activity up till now. There is a special page on this website dedicated to the award: WCA10 Award page

Note that this is a special service for the most active chasers. It is not meant to be a real-time award system. It will only be updated once or twice until the final update after all activities have been completed and processed (beginning of July).

The special event for the 10th anniversary of the World Castle Award is now one week old.

In COTA-PA in this first week we have had 7 special calls active (PB10WCA, PC10WCA, PD10WCA, PE10WCA, PF10WCA, PG10WCA and PH10WCA), activating a total of 17 different castles.

Propagation has at times been challenging but so far more than 1600 QSOs have been made. The top chasers of this special event - after the first week - are as follows (# stations worked, # references worked):

WCA anniversary - special event

In June COTA-PA is going to participate in the 10th anniversary festivities of the World Castle Award (WCA). For this occasion we will have 8 activators using 8 different special calls while activating castles that are part of the COTA-PA and WCA program.

There will be a special award for working these P*10WCA callsigns - with three levels (bronze, silver, gold) depending on the amount of contacts you make with the activators.

Most activity will be in the period of 8-16 June but some calls will be active on other dates in June. Exact dates and times will be communicated at a later date.

Kinkelenburg castle PA-00130 by PH0NO

Winter wonderland in Bemmel

Yesterday I activated PA-00130 (Kinkelenburg). Kinkelenburg is situated in the village of Bemmel and features an early 15th century tower.

Using Google Maps I found a spot within 1km from the castle towards the Waal river. The snow gave this quiet area a nice aura. The only downside was that I was freezing my hands off when setting up the antennas - as I forgot to bring gloves

Conditions on 20m were rather poor. I did see spots on 15m indicating contacts between EU and NA but I did not bring my 15m antenna with me. I stayed on 20m for almost one and a half hours logging only 54 calls. DX came in from the east only with EX8, UK8 and 4Z.

It took me some time to set up my inverted V for 40m as my fibreglass pole segments were frozen together on several places. When I did get on the air again I found that 40m was quite lively. The first frequency I chose seemed clear but I was greeted with constant S9 QRN after about 15 minutes. So I changed to another frequency where QRM was around S7 "only".

Skip distance was rather peculiar as Gx stations boomed in but I could only copy - with a lot of difficulty - one DL station. DL OMs normally make up a fair share of the 40m contacts. I know there were more but I just could not hear them (sorry guys). In the hour I was on 40m I logged 50 more calls - most of them at 59+10 (actually only "+" on my FT-857). There was no real DX on this band but I did log a new band DXCC when GJ6TMM came by. I worked GJ before on 40m but I was on holiday in F at the time.

Logging more than 100 contacts with some time in between to have a proper QSO made this another pleasant /P activity. I did have to face one last challenge re. the frozen fibreglass pole. With a lot of patience and some brute force I managed to loosen some of the frozen segments of my fibreglass pole so I could fit it in the car to drive to a warm home.

Activation of PA-00007 by PE4BAS

Participating in the "Happy Birthday" weekend, Bas PE4BAS activated PA-00007 Menkemaborg on Saturday Jan 19. He was on the air for an hour working QRP with a mobile whip antenna. Bas managed to log 19 contacts.

As this castle is near to his QRL he will be re-activating the castle this week a couple of times during his lunch break (11-12 UTC) aiming to at least log 50 castle hunters.

Activating Maarsbergen castle

More than 2 hours on three bands at PA-00110 and PAFF-018

With a gap in my schedule I was able to head over to Maarsbergen last Monday. The castle near that town is situated within the nature park Utrechtse Heuvelrug. This makes activating it even more interesting (combining PAFF and COTA-PA). PAFF-018 was already activated three times before (twice by me) but I thought the combination might make it worth contacting for enough hams "out there".

The castle is privately owned and not open to the public. It was built in 1660 and is officially registered as monument.

I did not plan this activation so I was driving around the castle grounds to find a quiet place suitable for a portable ham. To my surprise I quickly found two usable spots and chose one just outside the castle grounds (in front of a stately gate). 

PH0NO/P in the snow

This day was the first day it snowed in the area. This makes for nice views but also freezing hands when you try to set up an inverted V. My phone told me there was activity on 15m so I decided to start there using my end fed set up vertically. However 15m turned out to be rather quiet. After 3 contacts I already changed the antenna to my 20m end fed. In the next 50 minutes I logged 58 contacts. Then when 20m started to slow down I went out into the snow to set up my 40m inverted V. The performance of this antenna still pleases me a great deal. It was busy but QRM was manageable. I stayed on 40m for more than an hour to log more than 120 contacts.
All in all I logged 185 contacts in just over 2 hours of radio time - which shows it was interesting enough indeed. DX was sparse due to poor conditions and came in from the W1/2 (MA, NY), 4X and R9. Graziano IW2NXI and Lada OK2PAY made the trip on two bands.

Slot Zuylen PA-00114 activated by PH0NO

Friday I was over at Slot Zuylen (built in 1510) to activate the first castle in the province of Utrecht. Using 20m, 15m and 10m I logged 60 calls in about 90 minutes air time.
